At Saint Kentigern, we pride ourselves on nurturing exceptional communicators through our robust speech and drama program. Involvement in speechmaking and the dramatic arts offers our students numerous benefits, enhancing their oral literacy, confidence, and overall communication skills.

Every student at Saint Kentigern has the opportunity to develop their public speaking abilities. Annually, each student prepares and delivers a speech in their class, honing both their speech writing and delivery skills. Proficient speakers participate in internal speech competitions, with the winners representing the school in external zone competitions.

Drama is a vital part of our Arts and Creative Technology curriculum. Through drama, students engage in deep explorations of texts and images, activating their imaginations and creativity. This process helps them develop new understandings and perspectives, fostering collaboration, confidence, creativity, and empathy. By encouraging teamwork and imaginative thinking, drama helps students grasp different viewpoints and explore the human condition.

Our students have numerous opportunities to engage with drama, both within the school and through theatre excursions. Regular performances at student-led assemblies and for parent audiences provide frequent practice in a supportive environment. Every second year, we stage a full-scale drama production involving a large cast and crew, offering students roles from leading parts to backstage crew, allowing them to learn various theatrical skills.

Co-Curricular Opportunities

Beyond the classroom, intermediate students can join theatresports, an improvised form of drama that develops teamwork, quick thinking, and creativity. Additionally, students can undertake itinerant Speech and Drama tuition to further refine their skills. Our programs cater to both exceptional communicators looking to deepen their expertise and less confident students who need a nurturing environment to grow their confidence. They can participate in external examinations, allowing them to showcase their public speaking and acting skills on a broader stage. These experiences help our students become capable leaders and performers, ready to excel in various aspects of life.

At Saint Kentigern, our speech and drama programs are designed to develop well-rounded individuals who are confident, creative, and empathetic, prepared to communicate effectively in any setting.
