At Saint Kentigern Girls' School, we shape the innovators of tomorrow through the transformative power of hands-on learning.

In our meticulously equipped hard materials classroom, students embark on their woodworking journey by engaging with a variety of tools and techniques. They begin with simple projects that allow them to gain practical experience and familiarity with essential equipment. Under the guidance of skilled instructors, students learn to safely operate a scroll saw, belt sander, and drill press. This initial exposure not only ensures safety but also builds a solid foundation of technical skills. The classroom, situated within our purpose-built specialist building, is outfitted with industry-standard tools and equipment, providing an authentic workshop environment where students can hone their craftsmanship and produce high-quality, professional-grade work.

Our curriculum emphasises creative problem-solving through innovative woodwork projects. Students start with laser-cut templates that serve as a blueprint, but they are encouraged to personalise and adapt these designs, making them uniquely their own. This approach fosters an environment of experimentation and self-expression, allowing students to infuse their individual creativity into each project. As they work through these projects, they develop critical life skills such as perseverance, attention to detail, and a profound sense of pride in their accomplishments. They learn that quality craftsmanship is the result of patience, precision, and sustained effort.

In addition to technical skills, our program focuses on nurturing problem-solving abilities. Students encounter and address various challenges throughout their projects, learning to troubleshoot and find effective solutions. This hands-on approach not only builds their confidence but also enhances their resilience, preparing them for future academic and personal challenges.

Our commitment to a comprehensive education extends far beyond the confines of traditional learning. The hard materials program at Saint Kentigern Girls' School exemplifies our mission to develop well-rounded individuals who are not only proficient in practical skills but also equipped with the attributes necessary to excel in an ever-evolving world. Through this program, we aim to cultivate a generation of young women who are prepared to face the future with confidence, creativity, and a strong foundation in both technical and personal skills.
