At Saint Kentigern Girls' School, we ignite a passion for robotics, engineering, design and technology by engaging students in programming, designing, and building, while fostering innovation and technical skills through hands-on learning.

In our Junior School program, girls are introduced to the basics of robotics and engineering. They start with simple programming tasks, learning to control robots, such as Bee-bots and Ozobots, and navigate them through obstacle courses. This hands-on approach helps them understand concepts like momentum and resistance in a fun and engaging way. Our young students also explore building projects, such as marble runs, which develop their problem-solving skills and spark their curiosity about how things work. This is part of the fortnightly SPARK session where our girls collaborate with each other from across the Junior School.

As girls progress to the Middle School, they dive deeper into the world of robotics and design technology. They deepen their understanding of computational thinking with robots, such as spheros and mbots, using block coding to control their movements. They extend their knowledge of coding by creating animations and games in Scratch Edu. Engineering tasks are designed to support their knowledge development in other curriculum areas such as Social Studies with group challenges across the year levels creating a sense of community. This is part of our fortnightly Design Time where relationships and connections are built across the year levels. These experiences not only enhance their technical abilities but also build confidence and collaboration skills.

In the senior school, girls tackle more sophisticated projects that require advanced engineering and design skills. In the EPro8 programme, they follow design and build challenges, incorporating electronic sensors and motors to complete problem-solving tasks. This leads to external competitions where these events are designed to promote science, engineering and problem-solving. Our specialist classrooms provide a dynamic environment where students can experiment with various hard and soft materials and technologies, refining their designs through iterative testing. Senior students also develop coding skills and the ability to articulate their design process and outcomes. These projects prepare them for future academic and professional endeavours in STEAM fields.
