All students are taught curriculum music by a specialist teacher.
Year 4 students take part in the instrumental starters programme which includes violin, recorder and percussion.
This marks the beginning of the orchestral programme.
Students from Year 5-8 are encouraged to learn an orchestral instrument. This may be in small groups or individual lessons and the choice of instruments is wide. From this instrumental programme an orchestra will be created.
Entry to the orchestra is by audition. In addition, students may attend concerts such as Kiwi Kapers, which is part of the Auckland Philharmonia schools’ programme.
Choral Music
Many of our girls have a true love of singing and are enthusiastic members of one of our two School choirs.
Vox Box is a choral group for Year 3-5 singers and they rehearse weekly. This choir is for those students who are beginning to develop their choral skills and they are given opportunities to perform at selected events.
Highland Belles is a choir for students from Year 6-8. They also practice weekly and prepare for competitions such as Kids’ Sing. They may be invited to sing at family services, school concerts, Carol Service and assemblies. From time to time this choral group may join with choirs from Saint Kentigern College or the Boys’ School for special events.
